Flexural Strengthening of Steel Beams Using CFRP Materials: Part One: An Investigation on CFRP Failure Modes
The use of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) material for strengthening of steel structures has gained significant interests recently. There are various methods used for the strengthening of steel structures. Amongst them are the application of additional steel parts, external pre-stressing of parts, and reducing or bridging the gap between the supports. These methods require considerable time and cost. In contrast, CFRP is high in strength, light in weight, strong resistance to corrosion, and suitable for upgrading of steel structures. CFRP flexural strengthened steel beams have suffered various failures such as debonding, delamination, and splitting. Understanding of these CFRP failure modes is useful to find solutions for preventing or retarding them. This book has presented the observed CFRP failure modes in the flexural strengthening of several steel I-beams which were numerically modelled and experimentally tested.
Structural Design of High Rise Buildings: Detailed Background, Evolution, Analysis and Design of High Rise Multi Storey Reinforced Concrete and Structrual Steel BuildingsWith the passage of time and advancement in technology, people headed to cities from villages in pursuit of better occupations and luxurious lifestyles. As the cities ran out of space, it became problematic to accommodate the ever- increasing population. In this time of dilemma, civil engineers rose to the occasion and faced the challenge of providing accommodation to a large number of citizens in a limited space, defiantly. Hence, the proposal of high-rise buildings was put forward. Some decades back, there were no softwares to carry out the analysis and design of high-rise buildings. With the progress of time, as computer softwares were developed, a new era of civil engineering dawned, which made it possible to analyze and design high-rise buildings. High-rise buildings are, however, susceptible to earthquakes. In addition, the effect of wind load also becomes more & more prominent with the increase in height of a structure. Therefore, precise analysis & design of such a structure should be carried out in order to avoid any future catastrophe which is the objective of writing this book.
Chloride induced corrosion of steel reinforcement inside concrete: Use of half-cell potential to determine threshold chloride concentration for corrosion initiationReliable predication of corrosion initiation of rebars inside concrete is a key factor influencing life cycle evaluation of concrete structures under chloride-laden environments. Reliability of chloride threshold level (CTL) assessment mostly depends on reliable detection of corrosion initiation of rebars. It was aimed to assess the corrosion development on rebars within concrete subjected to an accelerated NaCl environment through continuous half-cell potential (HCP) monitoring using lead reference electrode in concrete and computer operated data logger. An AC impedance spectroscope is also employed to obtain HCP and other electrochemical parameters. Experimental study was carried out on two types of OPC and one fly ash concrete. It was found that the lead reference electrode is capable to detect corrosion onset of rebars in concrete accurately through half-cell potential monitoring. CTL was estimated for both the OPC concrete. The one year immersion test depicted that resistance against chloride penetration in fly ash concrete is very low compared to other OPC concrete. TG/DTA analysis confirmed CTL relates with CH content in hardened OPC concretes.
